When I was growing up in New Jersey, I was a lackluster Giants fan. As a family we were way more into college football so I never paid much attention to the NFL. But if you’d asked me, I would have said I was a Giants fan (NEVER the Jets). I didn’t really become interested in professional football until I moved to Kansas City and went to my first Chiefs game. Actually, it was probably my first Red Friday that intrigued me. “Red Friday” is when pretty much everyone in Kansas City wears red and/or Chiefs gear to show team support for the home game the following Sunday. Growing up in a place that had at least two teams for every sport, the Kansas City’s devotion to the Chiefs really impressed me. EVERYONE was a fan. Stores suspended Muzak in favor of radio coverage of games. Homeless people asked for the latest scores. Naturally I too fell in love with the Chiefs.
I wore my Chiefs sweatshirt yesterday while watching the Super Bowl. I will always root for the Chiefs – no matter how many bad decisions their coaching staff makes. But last night I fell in love with the Giants too. That game was the most exciting game I’ve ever watched. Surely it’s okay to have more than one team? I mean, they’re not like husbands. More like children, really. And everyone knows it’s possible to love lots of children at once.
The only problem I foresee in Giants fandom is that I don’t know anyone here who watches football besides my Dad and sometimes Hubby. I’ve yet to hear a woman even mention football. When I lived in Kansas City, I always had girlfriends to watch and/or go to games with. I’m seriously considering starting a Meetup for female Giants fans. Surely there must be some around here?
(BTW, sorry I missed Soap Opera Sunday. I’ll do it again next week. )

Not a football fan, but being NY/NJ transplants in New England did not go in our favor last night at the superbowl party we attended…my husband is VERY happy today!

If I lived in NJ, I’d definitely meet up with you to watch games…I love football! The Texas Longhorns and the Houston Texans are my teams. I also love baseball (Astros) and basketball (Spurs). Women who don’t follow sports confound me…and I still impress my husband after 11 years of being together with my sports knowledge.

I’m so team-oriented. I’m a Steelers fan. If they’re playing, I watch. If not, I’m all, “Eh.” (Although the game yesterday was a good one. That last quarter was so exciting!) Dave, while claiming to be a Steeers fan first, likes the Browns. I cannot watch the Browns with him. I feel all dirty when I do. Anyway, I question his Steeler loyalty and it gets ugly.

Congratulations to the Giants. They played such a great game. I myself was born and raised in MA, so as you can imagine…my heart is broken.
When does Spring Training start? Time for me to move on : )

I’m not a football fan, but growing up in NJ, my mother was a HUGE Giants fan. My mother is an elderly Italian women who doesn’t often get loud. So growing up, it was a bit startling that she was so very into football. She once literally startled me to the point where I fell off the couch because she screamed so loudly for them while we watched a game (she watched, I daydreamed).
She’s been disillusioned, though. The Giants of today bear no resemblance to the Giants of the 80’s/early 90’s. This time around, when I mentioned the Superbowl to her, she said, “Oh, don’t even talk about the Giants. I’m so sick of seeing them on t.v. I hope the Patriots kill them.”
Sorry, mom.
I was never very into football, but after being forced to watch with your mom (just my mom. My dad hates football), something rubbed off on me. I was secretly rooting for the Giants and it made me feel all warm and fuzzy when they won.
I suspect that has more to do with them being the underdogs, though, rather than the hometown team.

I was hoping the Giants would win, but something awful would happen to Eli….is that terrible? I just don’t like Mannings (any).

Yay Giants. Where do you live? You can watch games with me if you’re anywhere near Monmouth County.

That was a fantastic game! I was so happy the Giants won!

I think you are the opposite of me. You moved from NJ to KC, and I moved from KC to NJ! (But I live in Minnesota now, so whatever.)

Life – I can just bet you weren’t very popular!
Yvette – Well, if I’m ever in Texas we’ll definitely get together!
Leslie – I was like that this year. And the Steelers are my third favorite team, because my grandma LOVED them.
Trish – I am sorry. For you.
And Go Yankees!
Reiza – I love it that your mom was so into football. And part of my Giants love was that they were the underdogs. If I’m not into either team I always root for the underdog.
AFF – I’m not a huge Eli fan. . .or much of a Peyton fan, so that’s fine. Although I do wonder how the Mannings offended you. Brett Favre – now that’s a QB.
Jill – I wish I could!
Mama Zen – It made me so happy.

I’m not a big fan of football but I do enjoy watching the occasional game.
I’d be interested in joining your club just for the beer, snacks, and of course, good company
I don’t think we live near each other though. Trust me when I say that no one who lives anywhere near me wears fur and drives a Hummer. (I live 10 min from Newark Airport)

R- How does Minnesota compare? Jersey must have been a big shock – it was a shock to me and I spent 18 years here!
LunaNik – Beer, snacks and good company are half the joy. At least. You probably don’t live too far – I only live 30 (without traffic, anyway)minutes from Newark.
