Well, the top ten signs that I’m pregnant, anyway.
10. Parmesan cheese is the most revolting food on the planet.
9. Except for fish.
8. And whatever the houseguests cooked for breakfast.
7. Watching A Baby Story has suddenly become somewhat entertaining.
6. Twelve hours of sleep is really not enough.
5. Nausea only stops when you’re eating.
4. Obedience is a virtue that your children, husband and neighbors need to develop immediately.
3. Your chin looks like a small, mountainous country.
2. Nothing fits but yoga pants and fleece pullovers.
1. You desperately need ONE REAL DIET PEPSI, Tiger Balm for your sore shoulders, Zyrtec for your allergies, acne cream for your chin, a COLD club sandwich, some Brie and to dye your roots but you can’t because you’ve read that all of these things will deform your baby.
(Er, if anyone has any stories of doing these things while pregnant and having a healthy baby, please share. )
PS - Thank you all again for your support and good thoughts. You all rock. Even if it takes me the next three weeks to catch up on your blogs, I will.

Ooh! I asked about the hair dye thing. Granted, it was a hair stylist that I asked, but…
She said that hair dye is fine, just so long that you make sure your area is well ventilated. She also recommended avoiding bleach. But she said most box dyes are fine.

I totally did my hair. I even did electrolysis. I promise it takes a lot to do something to the bebe.

I’ve been on zyrtec and rhinocort daily my entire pregnancy. I have severe allergies and can hardly breathe without them. Every doctor has said it was safe.
I also eat deli meat, sushi, get my nails done, drink diet soda, go to the gym, and - gasp - have a small glass of wine with dinner now and then.
I promise you, you have to do something REALLY dumb for REALLY long to hurt your baby. But everyone errs on the side of caution and tells you to stay away from everything.
My daughter is better than normal. Truly, relax and enjoy your pregnancy.

I ate cold cuts my entire pregnancy. Didn’t find out until about 28 weeks that I shouldn’t have been eating them. Didn’t seem to harm Punkin at all.
I also drank Diet Coke early in my pregnancy. Then, fearing aspartame deformities, I switched to an iced tea sweetened with splenda and didn’t even think about the caffeine. OOPS. Still. Normal Punkin.
However, don’t shovel the catbox if you have a cat. That didn’t affect me, but I think it’s awesome you can get out of it when you’re pregnant.

Hehehe.
I remember those days…
Poor thing.

Dude, I ate Blimpie’s sandwiches EVERY SINGLE DAY that I was pregnant with Eeyore. Well, every day that I wasn’t eating COLD Taco Bell soft shell tacos. Lunch meat…it didn’t hurt my babies.
I probably would stay away from the Diet soda, but I would drink a real one. Calories be damned, you’re pregnant! Also? Diet? Ew.
And the hair dye…so long as you don’t ingest it I think you’re okay.
Just make sure you’re in a well ventilated place and go to town.

Okay, so the adoption process has many, many negatives…but at least I didn’t have to deal with these! I practically had an IV of coffee and Diet Coke to help me through the years!

I feel ya!
The hardest thing for me was giving up caffeine. One soda with caffeine won’t hurt the baby, but if you’re like me, it’s a slippery slope. I can’t stop at one. I drink a regular root beer when I really want a pop.
Ah, and my show of choice has been “Bringing Home Baby.” Love it.

I drank pop through both my pregnancies (Wild Cherry Diet Pepsi thankyouverymuch) and I plan to do so in future pregnancies. I gave up pretty much all the other no-nos but that was one I just couldn’t handle not having.

I colored my hair all the time when I was prego. I just made sure I was in a ventillated area so the fumes weren’t too strong. They used to say you couldn’t dye your hair while prego cuz of the bleach but that isn’t in most dyes anymore.
I used Benedryl for kids when my allergies would flare. The doc said it was that or Tylenol allergy pills but the Benedryl worked better.
I never heard anything about not using Clearasil while prego and I sure did use enough of that!

I’ve used AndreAnna as my model and I have to say I expect a perfect baby.
God bless cold cuts. I love them.
LifeAsIKnowIt // April 10, 2008 at 8:56 am
Hang in there.
I’m right there with you…puking for the past 2 weeks, sleeping all day, and feeling like a neglectful parent.

I used salacylic acid, glycolic acid and Clearasil when I was pregant. When I aksed the doctor about its safety, she looked at me weird and said, “Just don’t drink it.”
Also, I recently started using Bare Escentuals Rare Minerals for blemish control (I’ve tried a lot since I have adult acne-bleh). It works great. It helps hormonal acne, but doesn’t cure it (in other words, I still break out around my period, but not as much). The Bare Escentuals foundation (if used with their foundation brush) covers blemishes incredibly well, better than any liquid I’ve ever tried. Using the mineral makeup takes some practice to get the coverage right.
When I was pregnant the thought of diet soda or sprite made me gag… and I drink 2-3 cans of Diet Coke or Pepsi daily!

jersey, i did everything they tell you NOT to do while pregnant these days. with both kids. there is the school of thought, “why risk it? what can’t we give up for 9mos?”, and then there’s me, “they didn’t know all this shit when my mom was chain smoking and drinking wine in the 70s when she was pregnant with me.”
so i figure, anything i did while i was pregnant - aside from staying off of the street drugs and thalidimide - would be fine for my babies. and they are fine (so far!)
kendra // April 10, 2008 at 1:02 pm
Go for the dye job. Didn’t hurt my babes. Craved Coke and drank it with both babes and still had Sweet-n-Low in my coffee. It will all be ok. Psst…I even had a glass of wine twice during my nine months with each.

Wordvixen - Hairstylists probably know more about hair dye than doctors do, really.
AFF - Intellectually I know that, I really do.
AndreAnna - Have I mentioned lately that you’re my idol?
Thalia’s Child - That cat box idea makes me want to get a cat.
Becky - Stop laughing!
Karly - But I like diet. My mother let me drink her Tab at a very young age - it warped me.
CC - There are definitely minuses to every situation, that’s for sure.
Leslie - I like that one too!
Jen - Okay, I’m having a real Diet Pepsi tomorrow.
Kathryn - I don’t where I first read about the Clearasil ban, but I sure wish I hadn’t.
cass - She’s definitely my idol too, now.
LifeAsIKnowIt - I think I’ve been more crabby than neglectful - but surely the kids won’t be scarred by this short period in their lives, right?
Anne - Where do I buy this Bare Escentuals stuff? And I think I’d like your doctor.
matteroffactmommy - That runs through my mind too - how did we all come out so normal in the ’70’s when our mothers smoked and drank their way through?
kendra - Right now life without wine isn’t too traumatic (ah, a good side of the nausea), but down the road it will probably REALLY bother me.

Oh man…I forgot what a pain in the ass it is to be preggers. Don’t you wish that you could just sleep straight thru the entire 9 months??
