Camp is now over
Disposable income gone
six weeks of nothing?
Today was Ironflower’s last day of camp. We have no disposable income. We have no pool membership. What in the heck am I going to do with the kids for the next six weeks? I can’t handle more than an hour and a half at the park and they can’t handle library story time more than one day a week. Other than letting them watch several hours of Noggin and PBS Kids (LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the show SuperWhy) every day, what are we going to do?

In our community, we have lots of free summer activities, such as concerts for kids, parades, etc. Maybe you have similar things where you live?

I’m faced with the same dilemna. Does your local mall have any free programs during the summer? Many of them do.

Have them practice sitting very very still. Or maybe you could interest them in a game of wash Mommies car.

Ooh, tough one. Our local library has passes to local museums, but not all of them do. Otherwise maybe bike rides and picnics and playing in the sprinkler and lemonade/Kool-Aid stands and going to whatever water (lake/ocean/pond) to either swim or fish, making crafts – just thinking of some of the things I did growing up without money for pool membership. Hope you get some good ideas!

get the cheap inflattable pool for back yard and let them go to town, we got a froggie one and it works wonders.

Squirt ‘em with the hose. Yeah, I know…that’ll work for about about 30 minutes. I dunno what else you’re going to do though. We do lots of playing at the local library since they have different toys than home, the gym daycare (again with the different toys and BONUS! someone else is watching them!), and the playground. Also? I ship them to grandma’s as much as possible.

Have a picnic. Make Jello squares. Make popsicles. Make an ice treasure hunt (freeze little toys in layers of water in a tupperware and then let them dig them out in the yard as it melts) Make Rice Crispy Treats. Feed Ducks. Run through the sprinkler. Go to the Farmer’s Market.

Come over to my house on Monday or Thursday next week! (I am serious). I have a crazy, huge swing set, a small kiddie pool and some other fun toys to keep the kids busy.
Even better, I have a deck where you can sit and sip mojitoslemonade and I can cook some hot dogs on the grill

I like SuperWhy, too. And, Word World, of course. I say you need to come up with some serious arts and crafts. That and maybe invest the twenty bucks on a Target inflatable pool.

Joyce – Not really, to be honest. Only the library is free here.
Karen – No free programs at the mall here, but at least there’s a free play area.
Suzie – Oh, I bet I could get them to watch the car. Brilliant.

Maggie’s Mind – They’re too little for real bike rides and lemonade stands, unfortunately and there’s no free water area around here.
