Do They Still Sell Guess Jeans?

August 19, 2008 · 13 Comments

I never thought I would say this. But. . .I kinda miss high school.

It’s not that I peaked in high school or anything. I was filled with angst and insecurity, unable to attract and/or keep a decent boyfriend, secretly intimidated by all of my friends because they were all prettier and/or smarter and/or kinder than I could ever be. I was convinced that my size four body was fat. I was just as much of a hormonal loser as the next person. Though I did have really cute clothes. For the eighties, anyway.

What I really miss:  I miss actually resting when sick. I miss not having to clean the bathroom or pay the bills. I miss having all of my friends live within five miles of me. I miss being a size four (especially because I would totally appreciate it now). I miss sleeping late on the weekends. I miss beer. I miss going out for lunch every day (do they even allow open campus anymore?). I miss getting a real tan from the SUN. I miss having a close friend with a pool. I miss being able to actually finish a to-do list.

Is there anything you miss about high school?

I miss doing my hair and having it actually look good when I’m done.

The sad thing? All the great things you listed aren’t much part of the high school experience today, I don’t think (except maybe for the beer).

Kids who miss school due to being sick are penalized beyond all reason and have to make up every ounce of work. Many of them have jobs, too many extracurriculars, etc., etc. They do have their friends living nearby.

Open campuses are very few and far between – my DS is lucky enough to go to a school that has one. It’s one of the best parts of his school experience because he truly learns to navigate downtown, which is something a lot of our suburban kiddos here don’t learn.

And the t0-do lists? So many of these kids are just grilled into the ground.

Sigh. I think they miss your high school days, too.

This wasn’t a negative to the post – I couldn’t agree more with what you said – I just wish we’d slow things down a bit for our kids.

feener – I actually wanted to be flatter in high school. No girl is satisfied in high school!

Becky – Totally. And it’s not like you can go on vacation to make it all go away.

designHer Momma – I definitely should have thought of that – I can’t remember the last time I was successful with my hair – I hope it was after high schoo.

Jen – That’s awful! Although I guess they won’t be in their thirties and missing the good old days.

I miss that sense of wonder … that the world is mine to seize. Now I’m just a fat hairy jaded guy.

Oh man. I didn’t have to do shite in HS, nothing at all. I did enough to get by. That doesn’t fly anymore!

Hear, hear! I miss all those and more.

You know… I was actually thinking about Guess! jeans the other day. I miss them. I felt like the queen of the world when I got my first pair. *sigh*

nah, I didn’t like much about those “good old days” except I did meet my now husband in high school. and I wouldn’t mind not having to be responsible….

I totally agree with you. I loved being taken care of as opposed to being the care taker. I also look back at the innocent young love between my spouse and I.
